This is a big pub, and very worthy of a visit. The bar staff and Management are friendly, and the atmosphere inviting.
The Oak Room lounge has oak paneling all around, apparently protected as a listed feature, and quite rightly so. This is a mellow room, frequented by the longer-term regulars, made comfortable with 2 real coal fires. The walls are sprinkled with a set of historic Cardiff pictures, which makes it one of the most interesting and best pubs of Cardiff.
The Public bar attracts a large student population, especially during live sports events. It is truly cavernous in size, where even 4 pool tables fail to dominate.
The food menu is now revamped with a good range of well-priced offerings. Steak specials on offer on Fridays/Saturdays, and a Carvery on Sundays. And a good selection of wines. Built-in 1890, for many years a pub-hotel, Claude has undergone two significant transformations in recent years.
Before 1973, the Oak Room was a men-only lounge, with the other half of the ground-floor split into a public bar, a ladies-only bar called the Snug, and a skittles alley at the back.
Around 1994, these three areas were opened out into one area.
Significantly refurbished in December 2005, with lounge oak floor restored to its former glory.
